‘More accessible and easy to use’ – Updates to health and safety handbook complete


The key health and safety handbook for seafarers has been given a makeover, making it “more accessible and easy to use”. 

Following industry and stakeholder feedback the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has updated the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers (COSWP).  

 

While still providing the same important guidance to the seafarer community, the code’s language, design and structure has been updated, making the contents of the code informative but simple and clear.  

 

The physical format of the code has also changed to a bound copy rather than loose-leaf, making it easier to access the most up to date information. 

 

A sample of the revamped code went to consultation at the end of last year, and now, after receiving an overall positive response, the new version has been officially released today.  

 

MCA Chief Executive Virginia McVea said: 

 

“The Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers is such an important tool and we’re excited to finally share the latest version.  

 

“It has been our constant aim to reflect industry feedback and address concerns, ensuring the best version of the code is available to all that need it. There are real benefits that come with this new version – most importantly it’s more accessible and easy to use. 

 

“It is mandatory for UK ships to carry COSWP, and we are sure this new edition will be easier for seafarers to get the information they need.”

Five out of the six ships inspected today by Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyors have been detained. The Astoria, Astor, Colombus and Vasco de Gama at Tilbury have all been detained. Oral exams to be held online under plans from Maritime and Coastguard Agency

Engineering oral exams will commence online from 11 May under new plans announced by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. In addition, the MCA is also actively working on plans to provide an online way of carrying out Deck oral exams. Marine offices will get in contact with candidates who had previously had theirs cancelled to arrange new dates but everyone is being asked not to get in touch while the backlog is cleared. Shortlist of bidders announced for the next decade of Coastguard search and rescue aviation

The shortlist of companies being invited to tender for the next generation of search and rescue aviation has been announced by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. From today (10 June), the shortlisted bidders will be invited to tender for the UK Second-Generation Search and Rescue Aviation programme – known as UKSAR2G – to provide HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopters, planes and remotely piloted drones.
