Unlocking greener growth in offshore wind sector discussed at UK-wide event

A UK-wide conference looking at all aspects of maritime decarbonisation in the offshore wind sector is being held today in Glasgow (22 February).

The event – which is now fully booked – has been organised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Scottish Maritime Cluster and the Workboat Association and being held at the City of Glasgow College.

There will be a specially recorded message from Maritime Minister Baroness Vere as part of the event.

Experts from across the offshore wind industry will be involved, bringing the latest research and evidence for progress in decarbonisation, alongside exhibitors supporting the move to cleaner shipping.

The objectives for the day are to bring people together to share key information and guidance on decarbonisation for offshore wind vessels as well as get insights and feedback from stakeholders and owner operators to feed into relevant parts of the UK Government.

As part of the day, the MCA will be including a presentation on its ongoing work on the most viable low emissions power and propulsion technologies for crew transfer vessels and service operation vessels.

Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero Energy and Transport Michael Matheson

This event is for the offshore wind sector and will particularly target the operations and maintenance fleet which is responsible for the largest share of emissions (crew transfer vessels and service operation vessels), but will also be relevant to any vessel type in the sector.’

Two sets of four separate workshops are being held in the afternoon covering subjects including ports and infrastructure, skills and training for seafarers in decarbonisation, ship building and regulation.

Transport Minister Baroness Vere said:

“Decarbonising transport and increasing offshore wind is a pressing target not only for the country but the whole planet, and we'll continue working with industry to unlock the boundless potential of greener growth.

"Conferences like this one are an important step for unlocking ideas and sharing information, as well as serving as a catalyst for action, investment and decision making.”

Saskia Daggett, Relationship Director from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said:

“There’s a lot to look forward to and engage with in decarbonisation in the offshore wind industry.

"We are looking forward to bringing together expertise from across the maritime sector to celebrate the highlights and work together to find solutions for the key challenges.”
