World Hydrography Day 2021: Caring for our oceans, seas and coastlines

It's World Hydrography Day 2021 (21st June) and we’re celebrating the scientific work which helps take care of our oceans, seas and coastlines.

As part of the UK Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP), the MCA’s dedicated team is responsible for managing hydrographic surveys in UK waters – ensuring that internationally recognised standards are met.

The data we gather supports safety of navigation at sea.

The MCA’s CHP systematically collects and compiles the required hydrographic data to ensure our nation’s nautical charts and publications are current, accurate and fit for purpose. These products enable mariners to make informed, safe decisions about their choice of vessel routeing to avoid hazards and so protect shipping, life and the marine environment. 

It’s our job to provide systematic surveying results and technical oversight to monitor the UK’s waters in the short and long-term.

Five ships detained after inspection following concerns raised about crew welfare

Five out of the six ships inspected today by Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyors have been detained. The Astoria, Astor, Colombus and Vasco de Gama at Tilbury have all been detained. The Marco Polo at Bristol has also been detained following its inspection. All five are from the same company – Global Cruise Lines Limited. Four of the vessels are flagged with the Bahamas and one with Portugal (Madeira) . Oral exams to be held online under plans from Maritime and Coastguard Agency

Engineering oral exams will commence online from 11 May under new plans announced by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. In addition, the MCA is also actively working on plans to provide an online way of carrying out Deck oral exams. Marine offices will get in contact with candidates who had previously had theirs cancelled to arrange new dates but everyone is being asked not to get in touch while the backlog is cleared. Katy Ware, Director of Maritime Safety and Standards said: ‘We completely understand people are anxious to get their all important exams done but we can’t accept any new oral exam bookings until we have cleared the backlog of those who had theirs cancelled because of Covid-19.’ ‘We will publish a MIN later this month to provide further guidance on accepting new applications for oral exams. Safety tips and checklists feature on new app for seafarers

A new app for seafarers, launched by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, is a chance for those working at sea to have safety advice, checklists and important resources at their fingertips.    The Official MCA Guidance app will provide seafarers useful, practical information on how to be safe at sea, as well as how to prepare for important parts of the job like vessel surveys and inspections.   The app also includes resources designed to support and maintain seafarers’ physical and mental health.     Seafarers are part of an incredible, unique industry, but this can come with periods of hardship, pressure and prolonged isolation, sometimes with limited services.
