Maritime & Coastguard Agency detain fishing vessel at Shoreham Harbour

A fishing vessel has been detained by Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyors after they found it had no drinking water on board and an open sewage tank.

The vessel – the Olivia Jean – was detained at Shoreham Harbour following an inspection under the International Labour Organization Conventions.

Surveyors also found incorrectly completed Fisherman’s Work Agreements, no evidence of compulsory accommodation checks and no food and water inspections.

They also found no evidence of there being water fit for consumption and the toilet emptied into an open sewage tank.

The Olivia Jean remains under detention and its inspection has been suspended. The rest of the inspection will continue after the owners TN Trawlers invite MCA surveyors back on once the initial highlighted deficiencies under ILO 188 are put right.

Katy Ware, Director of Maritime Services said: “We take our responsibilities to seafarers and their welfare and safety very seriously. This fishing vessel will remain under detention until all the current deficiencies are rectified and the rest of the inspection can take place.”
